Our First Post-Claire Getaway

We have loved getting away to the Sedona/Flagstaff area ever since we moved to Arizona. A few weeks ago, we decided to book a last minute quick weekend getaway to Oak Creek Canyon, which is in the mountains between Sedona & Flagstaff. Claire had just turned 5 months the weekend we went away and is growing so much everyday. We are lucky to have found the perfect babysitter to take care of Claire so we could getaway for a few days.

Our first baby-free weekend was so relaxing and restorative. We hit the road around 5 on Friday afternoon, and within a few short hours arrived in Sedona. We stopped at the Sedona Whole Foods which was a treat in itself. The store was decorated already for the holidays! I got to stock up on my favorite peanut butter and we picked up some groceries for the weekend.

We then headed up to The Canyon. We stayed at Destination @ Oak Creek Canyon. I think it might be a newer property because I don’t ever remember seeing this place during my many times searching for cabins online in the area.

This place was super cute. It is more of a motel style place than a cabin, but it does have a nice exterior cabin look and a getaway feel on the inside.

We stayed in a one bedroom and it was just the right size for the two of us. It had a modern yet rustic tiny home vibe. We also had a semi-private patio area with a grill.

Since we didn’t get settled in until about 8 pm on Friday night, we decided to do more of a snack plate dinner with pita chips, guacamole, gruyere cheese, and charcuterie. It was fun, easy, & yummy! We shared a bottle of wine from our favorite winery in the area, Page Springs Cellars (that I bought at Total Wine in the Phoenix area ;)).

On Saturday morning we slept in a bit, which was so nice! Michael made a delicious breakfast and assigned me to take some time to work on my blog.

When I saw the pictures of this place, I envisioned myself with a hot tea, sitting at the cute breakfast bar, working on my blog. That is just what I did, and it was even more awesome than I imagined! I also sat out on the patio wrapped in a cozy blanket with another hot tea while I wrapped up my first blog post in a while. It was so nice!

We enjoyed a delicious egg scramble with veggies & bacon & mixed fruit on the side, made by Michael. We then used the rest of the day to basically hibernate in our cabin retreat. Michael got to work on a tech project he has been wanting to get to; I worked on a variety of blog-related tasks and then took some time to think about my photo projects I have been wanting to get to. It was nice to have such a long stretch of uninterrupted creative time.

Michael made a yummy dinner of butternut squash noodles with mushrooms, onions, and alfredo sauce, a salad, and steak. We watched a sweet movie called Gifted which I fell asleep to, but I heard it was good 🙂

I got to sleep for 9 hours Saturday night which is a definite record for me for, at least over the past 5 months. I also got to meditate a few times over the weekend interruption-free!

Michael had the great idea to have a picnic brunch outside on Sunday after we checked out. We found a nice yard on the property with chairs, a table, and beautiful views. We enjoyed another great breakfast made by Michael, and then put the golf clubs & practice balls to good use!

Slide Rock State Park was only half a mile away from where we stayed. We planned to go on a hike there, but when we pulled up to pay at the park entrance were told it was only a swimming hole – no hiking. We didn’t really believe the guy but turned around anyway. I looked it up and there are 3 short but named trails. So now we know for next time!

We decided to keep going up the road to Flagstaff and enjoyed the scenic route. I had gone to a tea house, Steep, in Flagstaff a few years ago and loved it. I had been wanting to bring Michael there so that’s what we did!

This place makes all kinds of tea lattes. We were there for a bit and ended up trying 2 lattes each. Michael got coco loco and earl grey and I tried the lavender mint and pumpkin chai lattes. All were delicious!

It is always fun to getaway to Flagstaff this time of year. I liked seeing all the people in their scarves, sweaters, winter coats, and beanies. It was definitely not freezing but fall was in the air!

We are always looking forward to our next Sedona/Flagstaff getaway – actually, our next one is right around the corner. One of these days, we will have our very own vacation tiny home parked up there. Until then, we enjoy seeing other cabins and collecting ideas for ours.
